5 stylish new hotels in New York City

Big Apple style: the Gansevoort Park Avenue hotel

By Mark Chesnut

New York hotels are, by nature, designed to appeal to both leisure and business travelers. And the most recent round of New York hotel openings are an excellent example of how the Big Apple combines style, service and location to serve the needs of a variety of travelers. Anyone planning a New York vacation or business trip would do well to check out these new additions.

Aloft Brooklyn
Starwood’s growing Aloft brand — which aims to combine contemporary chic with affordable prices — has debuted in the borough of Brooklyn, near the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Its xyz Bar and Re:mix Lounge are designed to be social hubs, while the two meeting rooms are ideal for travelers looking to conduct business.

Andaz 5th Avenue
Hyatt’s boutique brand has wowed visitors with its great style and excellent cuisine. The hypo-allergenic rooms are modern, luxurious and comfortable, while the stylish Apartment 2E offers well-designed meeting space, strategically located in the heart of midtown Manhattan, just across the street from the iconic main branch of the New York Public Library.

Dream Downtown
Famed hotelier Vikram Chatwal has brought his Dream hotel brand to Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood with Dream Downtown, a delightfully modernist property with quirky-cool design elements and a rooftop lounge that offers inspiring views of the city.

Gansevoort Park Avenue
This company’s hotel in New York’s Meatpacking district became a hotspot so quickly that was no surprise when the newer Gansevoort Park NYC joined the list of must-see hotels and social venues soon after opening. Sleek and stylish, the Park Avenue location has sumptuous decor, a wonderful rooftop pool, extensive dining options, meeting and event venues for up to 500 people, and a see-and-be-seen bar and lounge.

Nolitan Hotel
Perhaps the newest of all is the 55-room Nolitan, which opens in early August on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a few blocks from the always-fabulous SoHo district. Special perks at this design-conscious boutique hotel include 2 p.m. checkout, free packing and unpacking services and free bicycle, skateboard and laptop rentals. The rooftop will be available for private events as of Sept. 5.

Mountain majesty: Phoenix hotels with awesome views

Las Posadas of Sedona is known for its stunning red rocks, but the skies also amp up the ooh factor.

By Nancy LeFever

Arizona has some of the most amazing vistas in the world with its mountains, canyons, cliffs and the indescribable Grand Canyon. If you’re heading to the Phoenix area, book a hotel in nearby Scottsdale that gives you the best mountain and canyon views. Make Mother Nature’s Southwest splendor your travel destination!

Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain
It doesn’t get much better than staying at a deluxe hotel that’s literally perched on a mountainside. The Sanctuary Resort is on the famed Camelback Mountain. Nestled on the mountain in beautiful Scottsdale, this 53-acre luxury resort has an Asian-influenced spa and an award-winning chef on site. Oh, and did we mention the view?

If hiking the mountain is your style, it’s right outside your door. Or maybe you’re a tennis buff or would prefer a stroll in the meditation garden? It’s all here. Sip a glass of wine while you gaze at one of the most interesting mountains in the United States that’s named for its “camel back” shape.

Las Posadas of Sedona
If you’re up for a bit of a drive from Phoenix and want to enjoy the views of Oak Canyon, head for Las Posadas of Sedona. Kind of a combo of luxury suites and a very upscale b&b, this hotel is tucked into Arizona’s famous red rocks.

Oak Canyon is often called the Grand Canyon’s  “smaller cousin,” but it doesn’t skimp on the breath-taking vistas. Unlike some luxury b&bs, at Las Posadas you can opt for a spa package after enjoying a round of golf at a nearby course. Retire to your room with a double-sided fireplace – those Arizona evenings can get cool! Don’t forget the hot tub just outside your door — one of the suite options you can choose.

5 New York hotels for same-sex honeymooners

Toast your same-sex marriage on the rooftop bar of the posh Peninsula New York.

By Matthew Link

On June 25, 2011, New York became the largest state in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriage. It was a real nail-biter until the last minute, with the outcome of the marriage bill far from certain. Impromptu public celebrations erupted in the streets of Manhattan, and the mood was giddy and profound at the same time.

So why not support a destination that supports you? Now’s the time to plan a romantic weekend for you and your honey in the gay-welcoming Big Apple. The long days of late summer and early fall are one of the best times to get to the Big Apple before things turn cold and icy. Here are some of some hot picks for gay-friendly New York hotels:

Stay Hotel
Set at the heart of New York’s theater district and within blocks of some of Hell’s Kitchen’s hottest gay bars, the artsy Stay is a newcomer to the Times Square area. The hip Stay offers great value when compared to other boutique hotels in the neighborhood, with gay-pleasing perks like complimentary gym access at New York Sports Club. The 210 rooms are also loaded with the kinds of things that make it hard for you and your partner to leave the room — including L’Occitane bath amenities, iPod-friendly stereo, 300-thread-count Egyptian cotton bedding, feather bed and duvet, in-room movies and DVD.

At last: Celebrate your union — and the landmark legal decision — at a gay-friendly New York hotel.

The Peninsula New York
In a city where luxury hotels abound, the Peninsula is one of the poshest, an oasis of utter refinement at the heart of one of New York’s most bustling and gay-popular East Side shopping areas. Set in a gorgeously restored landmark Beaux Arts building from 1905, it’s just steps from top gay attractions like the Museum of Modern Art and Central Park. The spacious rooms are classically designed, with gay palate-pleasing splashes of elegance like D. Porthault linens and marble bathrooms — not to mention the signature Peninsula bathtub TV. The hotel’s rooftop bar is the setting for the gay-populated “Brunch on the Terrace,” served on summertime Sundays.

Ace Hotel New York
The New York outlet of the uber-trendy West Coast-based Ace chain (founded by a gay couple, and heavily gay-marketed) opened in 2009 in a little pocket just east of the Chelsea gayborhood. The manly-hipster design aesthetic and fun ambiance pulls in cool travelers (a good portion gay) from across the globe, and the downstairs low-lit lobby and lounge pulls in a wide swath of local hot scenesters (many of them also gay) nearly every night of the week.

Eventi
With the June 2010 opening of the Eventi, the exceedingly gay-friendly Kimpton hotel chain has finally arrived in Chelsea –  or more precisely NoChe, as some are now calling the stretch of North Chelsea. The Eventi’s stylish 292 rooms all feature original artwork, custom Frette linens, marble baths and other gay favorites like an onsite round the clock fitness center. The Plaza, the hotel’s 15,000-square-foot multi-level indoor/outdoor public space, hosts an array of unique arts and entertainment events.

The Benjamin
With a Midtown East address that puts it within a stone’s throw of both Broadway and some of the city’s best shopping, the beautiful Benjamin is the perfect home base for an indulgent LGBT New York getaway. During that gay festival also known as New York Fashion Week in fall, the Benjamin even offers the Fashionista Fling package, featuring gifts and discounts from some of the city’s most beloved high-end stores and boutiques. The Benjamin was New York City’s first (and for decades its only) environmentally friendly hotel, and is now one of only five hotels in the country to have been certified as a Five-Globe ECOTEL property.

Chicago hotels for your rock star Lollapalooza weekend

If you want to run into a rock star during Lolla weekend, book a room at the Hard Rock.

By Valerie Moloney

Whether you’re a Lollapalooza virgin or fifth-timer, you’ll want a cushy place to rest your head after sets by the Arctic Monkeys, The Kills, Eminem and a jillion other indie and mainstream artists. Between the hipster hangs and celebrity haunts, Chicago has established itself as the country’s premier music festival for the weekend of Aug. 5-7. Here’s where to stay and possibly stumble upon a rock star while you’re in the Windy City.

Chicago hotels for the cool kids

1. Hard Rock Hotel Chicago
Hard Rock sits on prime real estate across Grant Park, the site of the festival, and has hosted after-parties and DJs galore during Lollas past. You’ll want to stay here to be treated like a rock star, too: The property loans out Les Paul custom guitars.

2. theWit Chicago
The most stylish of Chicago boutique hotels brings on unexpected quirks, including hallways that pipe in bird tweets, and pre-recorded wake-up calls by Al Capone. Get there early for a spot at Roof, a panoramic space to ogle the pretty people and the Chicago skyline.

3. w Chicago – Lakeshore
Before theWit, Dana and others of its ilk, W Chicago wowed with its sleek lobby and indulgent spa. If there’s energy left from set hopping, grab a drink on the 33rd floor at Whiskey Sky, which was founded by nightlife impresario and Cindy Crawford’s husband Rande Gerber.

4. Dana Hotel and Spa
Peekaboo showers. Exposed concrete beams. A rooftop lounge with fire pit. Roving club carts. No, this ain’t L.A., and thank goodness, because Chicago has the better skyline.

5. The James Hotel Chicago
River North isn’t within stumbling distance of Grant Park, but it’s still close enough and chic enough for you and your entourage. Think West Elm meets Crate & Barrel, and a sexy lounge every penny that you’re going to spend on bottle service.

San Juan hotels mix business with pleasure

In the swim: the pool at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino.

By Mark Chesnut

The city of San Juan, Puerto Rico, is not only a hub for Caribbean vacations and cruises — it’s also a hotspot for business, meetings and conventions. Yet even business-minded travelers will find it easy to enjoy the tropical vibe, thanks to the scenic locations and indulgent amenities offered by many San Juan hotels.

Square one for large business groups is the 580,000-square-foot Puerto Rico Convention Center, which sits adjacent to the 500-room Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino, a meetings-focused luxury property that opened in 2010. But other neighborhoods in the metropolitan area have business-friendly venues as well, including meeting space and restaurants.

Top hotels for business travelers in the beachfront Condado district include La Concha, a Renaissance Resort, which recently debuted its new Suite Tower with one- and two-bedroom suites complete with kitchens. The hotel’s dining options also continue to expand; the newest venue is Voga, an Italian eatery that overlooks one of the pools.

Just down the street sits the Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza, an upscale hotel with a trendy lobby bar. Across the mouth of the Condado Lagoon is the legendary Caribe Hilton, which for decades has hosted big-name diplomats and celebrities.

Closer to San Juan’s Luís Muñoz Marín International Airport is the beachfront area known as Isla Verde, where luxury resorts include the Ritz-Carlton Carlton, San Juan and the El San Juan Resort & Casino. Nearby is the 222-room Verdanza, a hotel that recently opened a wine-and-tapas venue called Di Vino.

Also in Isla Verde is the Courtyard by Marriott San Juan Isla Verde Beach Resort, where the weekly invitation-only cocktail parties for corporate guests are being held on the beach during the months of July and August — providing the perfect opportunity to talk shop in a setting that could best be described as paradise.
