2 ways to beat the heat during a Disney vacation

When the mercury rises, escape to the Hoop-De-Doo Revue, a down-home, air-conditioned dinner theater.

By Deborah Bowen

Even to the most dedicated “Disneyphile” in the Happiest Place on Earth, the hot Florida sun can be taxing on the body and the spirit. Fortunately, Disney Imagineers took the weather into consideration and created a wonderland of opportunities for some super-cool fun outside the parks. Two classic indoor experiences that leave everyone smiling are High Tea at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa and the Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue.

During the hottest part of the day, the soaring lobby of the Grand Floridian beckons with Victorian charm.  Indoor topiaries and brass fittings lend to the period elegance, while a birdcage elevator evokes the feeling of excitement as technology of the era began to merge into modernity.

The tearoom in the Grand Floridian is just a perfect snapshot in time.  From the tea servers in Victorian attire to the traditional High Tea menu, the experience allows each Guest to feel as if s/he has stepped into another time and place.

The actual tea service is a highlight of the experience. Your server will explain in great detail each type of tea on the already-specific menu, and will even custom blend leaves to your taste and allow them to steep to the perfect flavor intensity for your palate. This was a real treat for me; as a tea novice (and generally not predisposed to the beverage, hot or iced, despite my Southern upbringing!), I was grateful for the chance to have someone else “assess” my tastes and create something I was guaranteed to enjoy.

The tea comes to you in a heavy silver kettle, poured carefully into a delicate china cup, and placed on your table, warmed by a rich velvet tea cozy.

Other traditional highlights on the menu include scones and clotted Devonshire cream, tea sandwiches and assorted cheeses. For dessert, the strawberries and cream are an absolute must-try.

As you sit and admire the view of the Grand Floridian’s meticulous outdoor landscaping, you’ll be indulging in a series of sensory (and historical!) delights. Soft music accompanies your treats, and you are lulled into a state of luxurious epicurean relaxation.

When it’s time to wake up and get your hootin’ and hollerin’ on, take off the tea cozy, slap on your cowboy hat and scoot on over to the Hoop-De-Doo Revue (HDDR)! One of the longest-running and most popular dinner shows at Walt Disney World, HDDR serves up down home cookin’ and family-friendly entertainment in a rustic (and air-conditioned!) Western-themed banquet hall, located in Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground.

All of the seats are excellent, but if you want some interaction with the troupe of performers, you’ll definitely want to get a floor seat. With those seats, you are almost guaranteed some good-natured heckling (or, as I was lucky enough to get, even a kiss on the cheek from the irrepressible Six-Bits Slocum – a fan favorite!).

The jokes, while very occasionally skewing toward the very gently naughty (like when Six-Bits checks out another performer’s heavily-pantalooned leg with barely-disguised interest), are appropriate for all ages and there is no swearing to speak of.  The humor is classic corny, with hearty doses of slapstick and pratfalls thrown in.

Dinner is served family-style, and my own children were thrilled to be able to grab fried chicken drumsticks right out of a tin bucket (serving tongs notwithstanding) and scoop hearty helpings of mac and cheese onto their plates from the platter in the center of the table.  Incidentally, my family does not eat any pork products, and when we learned that the baked beans contained bacon, we notified our server, who was more than willing to bring us “extras” of any of the other sides available on the menu!

Dessert — sinful strawberry shortcake — comes accompanied by its own theme song! The performers and servers all join in the fun as they bring shortcake, berries, and dollops of fresh whipped cream to your table.

From afternoon to evening, these two delicious ways to beat the heat are totally different from one another, yet each one valuable as an entire experience, from food to surroundings. High Tea at the Grand Floridian brings you back in time to a genteel and elegant era in history, while the Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue brings a little bit of cowboy sensibility into your vacation.  If you choose one or both, you’ll be sure to enjoy some of Disney’s world-class food and entertainment –  and, of course, stay cool!

Disney World’s hidden gem: Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

Tap into your inner ranger at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, one of the cheaper themed resorts.

By Jill E. Cooper

“Crickets?  Do you hear those crickets?” I asked my five-year-old son as we disembarked the water launch at the back of our favorite Disney resort.  We had just capped off an exhilarating day in the Magic Kingdom with an enchanting ride across a moonlit-drenched Seven Seas Lagoon.  By Jiminy, those were crickets we heard as we strolled back to our room along the animal track-imprinted sidewalks that wind through this rustic resort.  As we passed Fire Rock Geyser, it erupted one last time for the night, suggesting that we were more likely to be in Yellowstone National Park than in Central Florida.  These are just a few of the touches Disney’s Imagineers incorporated into the immersive experience at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, a true hidden gem nestled along Bay Lake in the Walt Disney World Resort.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge exemplifies Disney theming at its finest.  Inspired by the century-old National Park Service lodges of the Pacific Northwest, the property transports guests to a woodsy wonderland from the moment they arrive.  While the transformation begins slowly along the drive up Timberline Drive, by the time they reach the main lobby there’s a feeling of having landed at a unique and magical destination.

One of my favorite pastimes while on vacation at this resort is to station myself in one of the welcoming, overstuffed leather armchairs near the lodge’s entrance to watch guests’ reactions at the majestic seven-story lobby.  Framed by fallen lodgepole pines, two hand-carved floor-to-ceiling totem poles, and an imposing fireplace representing the geological strata found in the Grand Canyon, it’s easy to be enveloped by the resort’s predominant western theme.  Beautiful Native American artifacts, secluded alcoves, a bubbling spring soft but effective strains of cowboy music enhance the mood.

Timber and totem poles: The 7-story "wow" lobby at Wilderness Lodge.

With this level of attention to detail, it’s hard to believe that this is the least expensive resort in the Magic Kingdom area of Walt Disney World Resort.  Because it is not on the monorail line like its neighbors — Disney’s Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian Resorts– rooms at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge are often half the price of other deluxe resorts on property.  Yet, its proximity to the Magic Kingdom, a mere four-minute complimentary bus ride away, makes it a perfect fit for families with small children.  The kids will love the activities hosted at Silver Creek Springs pool.and the daily rubber duck races.  Cast Members at Whispering Canyon Cafe host a lively family-style dinner.  (Go ahead, order ketchup for those fries.  Just don’t say I didn’t warn you). Boat and bike rentals and free Wonders of the Lodge tours appeal to older children as well.

Parents can leave their little ones in the on-site Cub’s Den supervised children’s activity center for a few hours while they indulge in a sophisticated meal at Artist’s Point. Don’t miss the cedar plank-roasted salmon or the homemade black raspberry ice cream and cobbler.  This restaurant offers stunning views of the resort grounds and has walls graced by a number of breathtaking western landscapes inspired by the great American painter, Albert Bierstadt.

So, if you haven’t yet explored Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, I highly recommend you book a room here for your next Walt Disney World vacation.  It’s the perfect place to grab a rocking chair on the porch, soak in a hot tub or just listen to those delightful crickets after a busy day in the Disney theme parks.

Disney vacations: Dining with Chef Mickey and friends

Chef Mickey takes a break from cooking to mingle with guests at Disney's Contemporary Resort.

By Jill E. Cooper

As far as summer vacation destinations go, Walt Disney World defies all the traditional demographics associated with theme parks.  This magical destination is not solely for teens and young families.  No, this world-class resort attracts retirees, newlyweds, professional athletes, multi-generational reunion groups, conference attendees and families of every shape and size.  Despite the stunning diversity in this group, I can almost guarantee that high upon the souvenir list of all of Walt Disney World’s visitors is a picture with “the big cheese” himself, Mickey Mouse.

Coming home from Walt Disney World without a photo with Mickey is like returning from Paris without the requisite shot of you in front of the Eiffel Tower. So, what’s the best way to get that picture with the mouse that started it all? Let Mickey Mouse come to you while you experience a sumptuous meal on the fourth floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Known for its extensive buffet with food to please even the pickiest of eaters, Chef Mickey’s is my favorite place to score a photo with the world’s most famous mouse.  Here, you don’t have to stand in line under the Florida sun to get your one-on-one time with your favorite character.  He and several of his very famous friends rotate from table to table through the entire restaurant.  Just minutes outside the gates of the Magic Kingdom, this restaurant is in the center of the magic but since Chef Mickey’s is not found inside one of the theme parks, no admission ticket is required.  All you have to do is enjoy your meal, gaze upon the iconic monorails as they pass overhead and keep your camera at the ready so you’ll be prepared to capture that quintessential Disney souvenir when Mickey arrives at your table.  Advanced dining reservations are highly recommended and can be arranged by calling (407) WDW-DINE as far ahead as 180 days in advance of your vacation.

If you’d rather be photographed with the Disney princesses or a mischievous alien, then book reservations at one of the other Disney resort restaurants.  At ‘Ohana in Disney’s Polynesian Resort, naturally, you’ll say aloha to Lilo and Stitch.  The food here is served family-style and exhibits a delightful tropical flair.  The views of the Magic Kingdom from this restaurant are enchanting.  When the friendly cast member seats you, be sure to request a table near the windows so that you can bask in the glow of the distant castle.

Cinderella, her handsome prince and her hysterically funny stepsisters can be found next door at 1900 Park Fare in the midst of the splendor of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.  Here, too, the flexibility of an extensive buffet offers diners a wide variety of delicious options for breakfast or dinner.  So, if getting the ultimate photographic souvenir is on your to-do list for your next Walt Disney World vacation, consider a delightful character dining experience outside the theme parks.  It is an incredibly fun and hassle-free way to interact with the characters you have traveled so far to meet.

New magic aboard the Disney Fantasy ship

Dining at Animator's Palate aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship. Credit: Disney.

By Nisha Thakkar

While the Disney Fantasy, the new Disney Cruise Line ship, isn’t set to debut until March 31, 2012, I got a sneak peek and can’t wait to share the details with you. The Disney Fantasy will maintain some of the Disney Dream fan-favorites — like the AquaDuck, the first shipboard water coaster — but also has some really cool features that make it stand out on its own.

Animation Magic

Animation Magic at Animator’s Palate is truly something to be seen. Animator’s Palate is a whimsical dining room that celebrates the magic of Disney animation. The room is filled with animations, large paintbrushes, filmstrips and TV screens. The chairs are an adorable tribute to Mickey Mouse and feature the design of his pants – red with two bright yellow buttons. As guests are seated, they are invited to design their own animation masterpiece by drawing a character of their own using a template on their place mats.

Disney Fantasy cruise ship sets sail March 31, 2012.

Just before dinner, the lights are dimmed and guests are entertained with various Disney videos featuring classic Pixar and Disney characters. After dinner, Mickey gives the guests a special treat as he brings their drawings to life. Each guest’s drawing is featured within the video, which becomes more and more elaborate as it goes on. The animations skip, skate and dance side-by-side with characters such as Mickey Mouse, Jimmy Cricket, Cinderella and Snow White. At the end of the video, Mickey comes back to say, “So long” as the credits roll featuring the names of all guests and refers to them as “guest animators.”

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

At the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, young princesses and pirates in training are treated to a special makeover. The princesses are greeted by their very own Fairy Godmother in-training and are offered magical makeovers such as the Disney Diva, Pop Princess or Fairy Tale Princess. The packages include combinations of hairstyle, shimmering makeup and nails. Princess costumes, complete with crown, wand and shoes also are available.

The boutique is transformed to Pirate’s League, replacing the tiaras with skulls, for Pirate Night. Guests can choose from two pirate packages – First Mate (includes bandana, facial scars tattoos, fake teeth, earring, eye patch, sword and sheath) or Empress (includes bandana, shimmering makeup, face gem, tattoos, nail polish, earring, eye patch, sword and sheath).

Europa Nighttime Entertainment District

The Disney Fantasy pulls out all the stops with its European-themed entertainment district, exclusively for guests 18 and over.

  • The La Piazza lounge draws inspiration from Italian cities and their decorative outdoor plazas. The bar is modeled after a colorful vintage carousel.
  • Skyline, one of the most popular spots on the Disney Dream, is also expected to be a hotspot on the Disney Fantasy. Skyline’s “windows to the world” give guests a glimpse of spectacular locales in panorama such as Paris, London, Barcelona, Athens and St. Petersburg.
  • O’Gill’s Pub is an Irish bar with modern-day twists. The pub, filled with flat-screen TVs, gaming tables, darts and more, provides the perfect atmosphere for guests to grab a pint and have some fun.
  • Ooh La La, Disney Fantasy’s champagne bar, was inspired by an elegant French boudoir and it features their signature champagne.
  • The Tube, inspired by London’s subway, is a fun, vibrant space that has a 60s/70s vibe. Guests can walk across the Tube route map and pose by a red English phone booth.

Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular

With the introduction of Disney’s Fantasy comes the introduction of a new Aladdin-themed musical. Many of the classic scenes and songs will be recreated for guests aboard the Fantasy. And of course, an Aladdin production would not be complete without a magic flying carpet scene, which combines mechanical wizardry with state-of-the-art projections, allowing Jasmine and Aladdin to soar as they perform a heartfelt duet of “Whole New World.”

The Disney Fantasy will depart on her maiden voyage next spring from Port Canaveral on seven-night Caribbean itineraries. Make sure you visit Orbitz for information related to pricing and to book your trip on the Disney Fantasy.

How to Save Money at Disney World

Downtown Disney date nights: Hot days, hotter nights

Love is in the air: Be seduced by the Cirque performers' aerial feats at La Nouba in Downtown Disney.

By Deborah Bowen

How often do you hear the phrase, “I had the BEST margarita … at Disney!”?  One trip to Mexico Pavilion and you’ll hear it plenty.

Too often people make the mistake of dismissing the Walt Disney World Resort as a “kids’ place.”  So take my advice, grown-ups: Explore your inner child during the day then turn that Disney magic into date night once the sun goes down.

Start your rendezvous with a good meal at Paradiso 37 in Downtown Disney. With a diverse menu that trots the North, Central and South Americas, the restaurant sparkles at night, when couples gather at lakeside tables for live music and libations from the unique tequila tower. Entrees are gussied-up comfort food, from Mac and Cheese Bites to Colombian-style Crispy Hen and Chargrilled Filet Mignon. Desserts indulge sweet tooths. Split rich Tres Leches cake or outrageous Chocolate Stack: chocolate cake and chocolate mousse layered on warm caramel, topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and sprinkles.

After dinner, be sure to take in a movie at one of the 24 state-of-the-art theaters in the Downtown Disney AMC.  Or since this is Disney, go see Cirque du Soleil’s world-renowned, La Nouba, in its permanent location on Downtown Disney’s West Side.

Housed in a towering white tent, this is a much richer, highly-sculpted version of a traditional circus. Acrobats perform breathtaking feats of strength and grace. A narrative thread ties the acts together, while soaring original music provides a backdrop for the spectacle of movement.

Seats in the front of the theater are great; it’s fascinating to watch the performers from close-up. However, a visually stunning (and less costly) option is to sit in the top section. These seats afford a glorious panorama of the action, much of which is aerial.

Cirque du Soleil is located on the West Side of the complex, so a wonderful stroll will take you over to the Downtown Disney Marketplace, where shops and entertainment abound. As you walk, be prepared to enjoy Disney’s attention to detail and all the surprises along the way – music, mimes, jugglers and twinkling lights.

For grown-ups seeking romance, “a whole new world” awaits at Downtown Disney.

5 tips for your first cruise on Disney Dream

A Personal Navigator? Rotating servers? Scope out all the amenities aboard the Disney Dream.

By Jill E. Cooper

Four months ago I began the overwhelming process of planning my first Disney cruise. Impressed by all the amazing itineraries offered by the Disney Cruise Line, I finally narrowed the field to the Disney Dream, a journey that I happily took again. To keep your sail smooth, I’ve compiled a list of 5 things every Disney Dream cruiser should know before hitting the high seas.

1.      Whether you book a three-, four-, or five-day cruise, plan to hit the ground running.
The Dream is 40 percent larger than Disney’s groundbreaking Magic and Wonder.  That means you’ll have plenty of ground to cover in the all-too-short time you’ll spend aboard ship on your cruise.  Grab a Personal Navigator (the ship’s daily activities guide) and plan your attack as you await your boarding call in the Disney Cruise Line terminal.  Start your first day on ship with a free guided tour of the vessel or by signing up for the virtual Midship Detective Agency game.  This is a great way to gain familiarity with the ship that you will call home for the next few days.

2.      After booking your Disney cruise, check out your options for port adventures.
The Aquaventure waterpark at Nassau’s Paradise Island Resort and Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure on Castaway Cay were huge highlights for my 11-year-old son.  Had we not reserved these port adventure online before we sailed, we would have missed out on these memorable experiences.

3.      Head to the Senses Spa on day one of your cruise.
Most guests are distracted by other attractions (like the amazing AquaDuck watercoaster) the first day, so you will often find discounts available if you book spa services on the day of embarkation.

4.      Get to know your servers in Disney’s clever rotational dining system.
Although you will eat in a different enchanting restaurant each night on a three day Disney cruise, your servers will follow you in your rotation.  The 1,400 crew members who staff the Dream represent more than 60 countries and are truly fascinating people to meet.  It’s a special treat to have that familiarity at each meal and get to know these engaging people who will be taking care of you during your voyage.

5.      Buy any must-have souvenirs on board the Disney Dream before the morning your voyage ends.
Whitecaps, Mickey’s Mainsail and other merchandise stops on board the ship are only open for business while the ship is at sea.  Once you dock at Port Canaveral, these shops are closed.

Disney vacations: Pixie dust in the Hawaiian Islands

By Valerie Moloney

Like others in my generation who grew up belting out the words to “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Hakuna Matata,” I am a proud supporter of Disney. Having lived in Tampa for five years, I visited the Magic Kingdom every chance I got—how could I not, what, with a mere hour to drive? As the parent of a preschooler and first grader, I still get the warm and fuzzies when I see the fireworks above Cinderella’s Castle or actually get to meet Princess Jasmine in person.

Even without kids, Disney vacationers have a pretty compelling reason to visit the next resort: It will marry the magic of Disney with a Hawaii vacation. Aulani, the new upscale property slated to open on Aug. 29 in Ko Olina, Hawaii, pays tribute to the folklore, beauty and food of the islands along 21 pristine oceanfront acres. Once complete, the resort will boast 359 traditional hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom equivalent Disney Vacation Club villas in two towers, two restaurants (including one on the beach), an 18,000-square-foot fitness center and spa. At the theme parks, the experience might be affected by lines and weather, while a stay at Aulani — which means the messenger of a chief – can flow at a more leisurely pace and be customized by guests.

Head to the fire pit for storytelling or explore the area pineapple plantations or mountains during an offsite excursion. Swim in a 3,800-square feet lagoon with native angelfish, tangs and Hawaiian fish. Reserve time in the conservation lagoon to touch the velvety backs of stingrays. Proceeds from the interactive encounter will fuel local research and conservation efforts via the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.

For the tykes, the giddiness starts at mealtime with Disney characters at the buffet-style Makahiki, bubbles up at Aunty’s Beach Club with interactive touch tables and nature programs and explodes into full-on glee at Waikolohe Valley, a seven-acre water park with inner tubes and water slides. What’s especially attractive about this particular Disney resort is that the experience isn’t limited to rides, shows or games. So if you or your little one get stressed, you can simply go – no joke — swim with a dolphin. Now that’s some real pixie dust.
